Terrific and Thanks for the reviews
From David Bright of Corpus Christi, Texas on .
This is a good reason to own a television and DVD player. While the newly available video of the four-piece is well worth having this, the 5.1, the bonus tracks of deconstructed "trio" versions of various songs, and the bonus tracks really deliver.
Reading these reviews warmed my heart. From time to time, some of us have wondered whether we appreciate something that no one else really gets. It is heartening that there are many of us who appreciate this magnificent, crazy, sometimes unhinged music. Thanks to all of you out there. Dave
Whoa.

All I can say is, "Whoa". All music should sound this good.
About the best re-issue i have seen.
From Jay of colorado springs, Colorado on .
VERY well done. even the menu's are great. This would be worth it with just 1 remastered mix and the dvd/video. If you have "the definite edition" from before, you REALLY need this. However, its so well mastered and mixed that it could be used as a home theatre/stereo test disk. guess what? mine fails. :) I really enjoyed the video, especially when Robert would just stare into the camera when it was on him. LMAO. It was creepy :) I am sure he is making a statment or something. I am practicing that stare in the mirror. :) if i need to put people off. Now I do wonder how many of the group would wear those outfits today. Fripps is kinda gothic, so no biggie. John is on holiday in Hawaii or disney world :) and did David wear that gold suit on every gig?? yes i focus on the important things.
But there is a suprise bonus on this. yes. its big. I always thought Robert "chuckles" Fripp was a recent Sid invention. Not so. you will learn the true origin of this nickname from thi s release (and its about damned time! hahahahah)
Incredible amount of work went into this and it shows. Beyond value for money.

A question about the new 2009 Red
From mike of Asbury Park ...True, New Jersey on .
Was the new 2009 stereo 2 track RED remixed from the multi track or was it remastered in 24 bit 96 khz from the orignal 1974 mix. Im confused. I hope/believe my feeling is the stereo mix was redone from the 16 24 ? multi track. Am I correct are both mixes new.
Also will there be more dvd video material.
I recall Jamie Muir on the Beat Club 1972 where I have seen Larks I but am aware there was a improv and exiles recorded in MONO on a KCCC.
Also Easy Money with a improv from Central Park or on Don Kirchner 1973 I believe. There's even credits rolling at the end. Will all this be on the hopefully 40th Larks Tongues in Aspic/Starless and Bible Black cd/dvd. With everything remixed ( theres only a few tracks on Starless that are studio most are live and have been already released ( Amsterdam 1973 )
Oh isn't 1969/70's KC wonderful :-) and onward.
Red

Another amazing recording. I just cannot be concerned as some are with so many nuances but this Re-master is excellent. The picture inside of Fripp watching a performance is what he did every time I saw them at Central Park. When Golden Earring opened up for KC in CP Fripp came out to hear , I would assume, how the sound was. Can remember it like yesterday. Also had to die thru Jo Jo Gunne until KC finally arrived and pounded us senseless! Please SABB next!
Worth it for the video footage
From Brooks Rogers of Eden Prairie, Minnesota on .
This DVD is worth it for the video footage which is an excellent snapshot of the band at the time. I can't get behind the 5.1 mix at all though, the bass and drums are low and indistinct in the mix, it's as though they were an afterthought to Wilson since he seems more concerned about pumping Fripp's guitar. A general lack of creativity in the 5.1 separation as well. A missed opportunity here.
Steven Wilson hears it as it is.

This is well worth a purchase for the additional material alone and the excellent repackaging. A royal first class production worthy of a happy 40th celebration.
Buy -SW's perfect pitch !
From Andrew Mather of Bolton, England on .
This dropped on my mat yesterday.
As the music played and the packaging was perused it brought back memories of buying the vinyl close to its release in 1974. Happy Days, and forgive this reminisence. This would have involved a Saturday morning bus ride into Manchester to Victoria Bus Station with a walk across town to Rare Records on John Dalton Street. Descending into the basement I can picture well the extensive advertising for the album. I was of course far too reserved, innocent and well mannered to ask for one of these posters/display hoardings which I do regret.
I also recall it was of my first encounters with an openly effeminate, perhaps gay man, as he handed me the album.
This has always been a fantastic album and this 40th issue is brilliant - A Crimhead's must buy and every home should have one.
A rebirth!

I hadn't actually listened to Red in years, but the 5.1 mix I just received last week was a jolt. The mix was spectacular, clear and well worked. Steven Wilson is a master of 5.1, as Red easily holds up to Porcupine Tree's 5.1 mixes that have astounded me over the years.
The title track lunged at me as I had become so accustomed to the various live versions available from 1980 on. The ferocity in the album mix was offset by nuances hard to pick up in live versions. Wetton's bass is well represented and it was truly like hearing a new mix after hearing so many Gunn/Levin interpretations (all of which I love).
The rest continued to astound and amaze and I am now eagerly awaiting future releases after being somewhat hesitant to shell out cash for yet another Crimson re-issue.

"RED" Rocks
From Patrick S. L. Plumb of Palatine, Illinois on .
Having purchased most of the KC downloads, official album relesaes, and collectors clubs available, I was very interested to hear what "RED" was offering with something new. I was astounded. I pre-ordered and recieved the discs on Tuesday. I decided to wait until Friday nite to listen to the offering....patience,patience. WELL worth the wait. The music was Phresh. The remastering and remix was like I had never heard this album before. I have been a KC fan since '74 and have owned this on old vinyl in the day, 8 track and CD. But this release packs a whollop "in your face" that wont quit. The title track "RED" is blistering. all the way thru till the bonus tracks such a tasty treat for the ears and mind. As midnight approached, I watched the video portion of the DVD. Clear video rendering of 4 complete performances. I have never seen these before, and well worth this treasure by themselves. "Starless" is phenominal in it's entirety. "The Night Watch" has a brief improvisation before it kicks into the song itself. My only criticism is with this track of video footage. It's very very '70's with lots of camera effects. Otherwise these 4 tracks are clear recordings, great sound and it looks like culled from the original performance tapes. Nice investment that you wont want to miss. It will be on your playlist for the coming weeks, if not months.
Peace!!!
After a long long time of waiting
From Erwin of Tamm, Germany on .
for this isuue of RED I am fascinated.
Sounds absolutely great.
Shure a good peace of music is a good peace of music all the time, but I do love the "small apearances" of instruments inbetween.
Hope Lizard is the same success

40th Anniversary Red Exceeds Expectations
From Batmensch of Albany, California on .
Already one of my top 5 favorite albums, I had two complaints about the original Red:
1. The title track was flat sounding, like they recorded it in a fairly flat sounding room and did nothing to liven it up.
Well, this problem is fixed handily in the 5.1 mix; separation increases the fidelity of each instrument and the performance comes to life in a way that needs to be heard.
2. Providence, the first song on side two, was long and unlistenable. It was certainly unlistenable to me; I wanted more pounding, screeching prog rock and providence was several (too many) minutes of unnecessary noodling to my ears.
But in the 5.1 mix the clarity of each instrument is increased, and somehow the creepiness of the improvised, "concrete" performance is emphasized to the point where it becomes a new treasure, to me, and that means a big piece of this already wonderful album is now accessible to me for the first time. Bravo, gentlemen.
It also contains a CD version, versions in 96Khz 24-bit stereo, several unreleased tracks of varying interest, and some VERY well recorded videos from French television of what evidently seems to the be "Starless and Bible Black" era band performing songs like Lament and LTIA pt II, and very well.
I give it a good *****, it's wonderful, and certainly not more expensive than it needs to be.
Do I really need another
From ERIC R HEINITZ of LIVERMORE, California on .
This is at least my 8th version of Red from 3+ vinyls, 3+ CD versions and even the 8-Track tape, so I almost said "40th what? Enough is enough." BUT...you've probably never heard the Trio Version bonus tracks, never seen the French TV program in this quality (if ever!) and even the plain old album sounds fresh despite the many hundreds of times I have listened to it before. Buy this and put the older CD in the car or give to a youngster. Go ahead Nancy, Just say YES to one more Red (Nightmare.)
JAW OFFICALLY ON FLOOR
From Lindsay Planer of Southern USA, North Carolina on .
Words (or at least not mine) can do justice to the sheer sonic joy that is Red in 5.1 lossless. And the French video ... Fripplestein STARES RIGHT THROUGH THE CAMERA ... whew ... i hope every studio release gets this treatment. i know they certainly deserve it ...
