Red is the third album by the Fripp/Bruford/Wetton/Cross with the new (then) mystery lyricist Palmer-James. I still find the change to a more metallic/industrial sound, new artwork with the the new lyricist and lyrical style a major artistic coup.
Red is highly regarded by rock fans and musicians I know, but received not-so-happy reviews at the time; mainly because the critics felt that rock needed a fresh and authentic new direction after years of progressive bombast. I remember reading in the 1970s that Red was 'the epitome of midlands heavy rock' or some such thing and wanted to know what that sounded. It sounded great as far as was concerned and couldn't see what the fuss was about as there were only two other albums from this Crimson lineup. This is a rather poignant and romantic heavy rock album musically and (ahem) marks a continued 'descent' in mood from Lark's Tongues album. Whether this was intended to be last Crimson album is not known, but there it is - the last in a series of three very fine ART ROCK albums!

When the last chord of Starless starts to fade out, I get sad, because it finished... This album is simply amazing. Master piece! So small, so good!
If you breathe, get this album

This particular incarnation of Crimso had a knack for being so loose that they were extremely tight, and it shows here. Every time I finish listening to "Starless," I either: a) listen to it again, or b) shut off my stereo and think "well, there's not much point in listening to anything else, is there?"
GOOD FINISH

HI, BRUFORD REALLY PLAY WELL, ALOT OF ACTION AND VARIETY. WETTON IS STRONG, BUT HE COULD USE SOUND MORE. FRIPP'S SOLOS COULD BE MORE OUT FRONT. PROVIDENCE IS THE HIT OF THIS RECORDING IN MY MIND THEN FALLEN ANGEL AND NIGHTMARE. STARLESS IS KNOW TO BE A BIG DEAL, BUT THE ARRANGEMENT IS DULL. THE HORNS SHOULD HAVE BEEN FREED UP EVEN IN THE CONFINES OF THE COMPOSITION. CHECK OUT ALSO PUT THE "STARLESS AND BIBLE BLACK" CD, A LITTLE MORE ART.
Prog Master class.

If this album had only starless on it I'd buy it for that track alone. However this remains the strongest Crimson LP and sounds incredible in its 30th annerversity mix form, Priceless.
Not since the Court of the Crimson king had the band sounded so matched and together. Wetton is the equal of Lake on Vocals and at least in Crimson the better bass player.

Must have

Great album with little keyboards and lots of hard guitar. Fripp has a different voice on this one; this is obvious from the start. Don't buy this one looking for a previous album; King Crimson is never the same twice.
wow...
