Very high energy performance
From Jaime Andrés G of Arica, Chile on .
I obtained this months ago , along with other products from DGM . I have listened to the 1st disc many times . It is pure quality in terms of what is on tape . The quality is an audience tape from the early 70 s . But if you love this band , especially the Islands era lineup . You will devour this probably time and time again
Additionally , it has the only version of the song Islands , live . Ian Wallance mentions to us how well the band was sounding at the time , and how well they were enjoying the music , and thats the most important thing to a musician , is to enjoy what they re playing [ among other things ) .
I am a big admirer of the Formentera > Sailor s tale pairing , and here it is delivered with much strength .
A must have for the fans of the legendary Islands period
Okay audience tape from 1971
From Jerry Smith of Tacoma, Washington on .
Quality wise the worst release from The Collector's Club but still listenable. A cool set list for the most part. Okay I could live without The Letters which they should've left as Drop In. Dispite that it's an aud., you can still here the quiet parts quite well and the performance is very good.
Absolutely worth buying
From Joe Prisco of Snohomish, Washington on .
Let's be realistic, shall we? The Collector's Club offers legitimised boots. Some (many, actually) are rather better than we might expect -- equal to many industry issues. Others are compromised in some way, which is why they aren't industry issues. Brighton is one of these latter.
However, for a 1971 audience recording, this is pretty good. It appears to be from a medium distance. The mix is a little strong on bass drum, but we hear all instruments in good balance. Vocals are clean and well-mixed. There is some occasional sound distortion, but surprisingly little hiss or hum. Most crucially, there is nobody near the recordist to prevent our hearing the band.
In sum, I find myself quite in agreement with the gentleman who said that that the sound quality ceases to matter once the performance absorbs the listener. This is just what I expected Club releases to be: great music in so-so (but listenable) sound, at a reasonable price.
Below Common Standards Of Listenability
From Eric Litke of West Hartford, Connecticut on .
This recording is well below the sonic threshold demarcating "enjoyment" from mere "archeology". Notable only for the live performance of "Islands".
king crimson live in biighton oct.16 1971
From bill smith jr. of dublin, Virginia on .
yes the sound is really bad,but the playing is great.i loved the song islands and wish they had recorded
it that way on the original album. buy this cd if you love kc from that era. and remember it is an official bootleg. ps sorry about the spelling grammer and puncuationin.
Not as bad as you'd be made to think...
From Mike Chominski of Daly City, California on .
Although the sound isn't all it could be, the performance is so on that you can't help but listen. This is truly a unique show by this band, and not just because of the inclusion of Islands. The playing is much more straightforward than the later shows, but still contains the unique edge that this line up was able to give to the material. As for the sound, after a few minutes you get used to the atmospheric bootleg sound and can dig in! Recommended, but if this is one of your first Islands shows, I'd suggest Summit Studios or Detroit first.
What'd They Say?
From Loren of Chicago, Illinois on .
Everyone has already complained about the sound, yes,it's at best a bootleg, but we've gotten those before with KCCC, and the playing really is excellent, which makes listening to it that much harder because the recording sounds the recorder was in the toilet. What's really frustrating is what's being said between songs. The laughs seem so contrary to RF's grim reputation with cameras and recordists, it even sounds as if someone from Monty Python was there. Post a transcript!
Impaled on nails of......
From Matthu Stull of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on .
Sound quality. I like it. It makes 'Islands' sound so dreamy. Groon is pretty wild eh? But Mel Collins really throws some notes around. I'm writing from the moon. VCS3? not so sure about.
All you are really stupid
From Gustavo of Lomas de Zamora, Buenos Aires, Argentina on .
DGM says 1000 times that the cds of the KCCC are cds that are for FANS only. You've been warned, and even that, you bought it and now you are complaining?
Let's be constructive!!!
From Zoltan Imre of Budapest, Hungary on .
Two stars for the sound (maybe I should give less...) and one for the excellent performance. I think it doesn't make sense anymore to write here the same critical words like the other review-er. To be on the constructive side I have only one suggestion: The 21thCSM solo compilation on the second side of "Ladies of the Road" is a really fine thing. Why dont you guys at DGM make a same thing regarding the solo section of the "Sailors Tale"? This could find absolutely his own market. And for whom, who bought this cd in this pre-order option (which means: whith TRUST on DGM and before reviews were released!!!)and who are ery disappointed now, you can offer it for the half price.
Just one advice: You can enjoy this cd while listening to it at high volume in your car stereo and at low volume on a high-end set. Both are tested...
The DGM vision of chinese torture
From Alain Declercq of St Maurice Montcouronne, France on .
For my first purchase to DGM, what a disappointment ! Even if the music played by the band is really good, the sound is so dire, you just cannot stand it. I really like this group very much, so I force myself to listen to both CD, but obviously I will never have enough courage for a second listening: a pure chinese torture.
And yes, on CD2 21st and Groon are not ordered the way it is written on the cover and this web site, and yes the disk box do not accept to be open once and falls in pieces.
With the same order I bought Live in Heidelberg. I still do not opened it, fearing to be deceived a second time.
Shame on you, DGM, one month of waiting, no answer to my mails during three weeks, for THIS! Direct to the trash can after the first, and last, listening.

Thanks God for Alex Mundy?
2 for the sound, 5 for the vision
From Stephen Gadd of Soeborg, Denmark on .
Agree with previous posters in terms of audio quality pretty bad, performance excellent.
Also purchased on pre-order and disappointed that no caveat was included with info. as to tape source. My disc box also fell apart when attempting to take out disc 2.
I fully support the KCCC and the idea that musicians should get paid for their labours through it. I am also willing to accept less-than-high-fi if the disc sounds tempting enough. However, as this is in effect an "official bootleg" it is only fair to tell people what to expect, otherwise one is acting exactly as bootleggers do - selling a pig in a poke.
Having said that, I have certainly not been deterred from buying further releases. I, too, look forward to my free copy of Club 16!
DGM: The Great Deceiver!
From Anonymous of Long Branch, New Jersey on .
Is this a cruel joke? Did anyone at DGM ever consider full disclosure? I would never have bought this with a simple disclosure that the sound quality was basically as if you were attending the show but listening to it from inside the bathroom. If the playing is so damn hot you'll never know from listening to the disc, because you will have to torture yourself to try and decipher the mufffled noise coming out from your stereo....enough
POOR SOUND/FANTASTIC PERFORMANCE
From CARMELO HERNANDEZ RAMOS of ALICANTE, Spain on .
Sometimes the sound quality isn´t the main thing in music: This live bootleg has one of the best performances of the KC´s Islands era, really fantastic.
Dire - Part Deux
From Anonymous of Metropolis, England on .
Oh yes - and to add insult to injury:-
1) the track listing is incorrect in both places where it occurs (back cover and booklet) - Groon and 21st CSM are transposed.
2) the double-CD jewel case has to be one of the cheapest and nastiest I have come across - fell to bits as soon as I flipped it over to access disc 2 (and no, the damage couldn't have happened in transit)
Dire
From Anonymous of Metropolis, England on .
This is pretty dire, and I agree with the reviewer who expressed disappointment that DGM didn't mention the atrocious sound when promoting the special offer (which hooked me into an early order before reviews were available).
I've become increasingly disillusioned with KCCC over the years - delays in production, increasingly dodgy sound with very little objective information available prior to purchase, the apparently never-to-appear promised free remaster of a previous release to make up for the disruption to supply when the Club changed format, etc. As someone so keen to expose or ridicule sharp practices by others, perhaps Robert might consider whether he should first remove the beam that is in own own eye.
And yes, Robert can respond with "you don't have to buy it - move on".
And yes, I can respond with "perhaps I will".
Disappointing
From Anonymous of Cape May, New Jersey on .
I would have to echo the reviewers before me and say that I am extremely disappointed in the sound quality of this release. Some sort of caveat along the lines of the release notes for Earthbound should have been made available to prospective buyers before purchase. I was a charter member of the KCCC but left it after the first year. I am sorry I came back for another taste, and won't be buying anything else.
Brighton Live 1971
From Anonymous of Poughkeepsie, New York on .
Is the sound poor? Yes!! Is the playing good? Yes!! Despite the poor sound quality you can tell this was a quality performance by this incarnation. Sometimes bootleg quality recordings give music "character". A live version of the song Islands is nice and rare. Would I recommend this release? Not if you are concerned about sound quality. However, if you are concerned about the spirit of the performance and the music played, allowing for dismal sound quality, this is a good release. Please keep in mind that I also enjoyed the Moles Bath and the Zoom Club releases.
Listening to the band from the lavatory
From R Fermier of Naperville, Illinois on .
No doubt about it, this was a powerful show! Too bad the microphones were positioned in the loo. The sound is muffled and fuzzy, but the energy still comes through. For some reason they saw fit to include some of the banter between Robert and the audience, but it is unintelligible. STILL, you can tell something about the band from this recording. They were really hitting on all cylinders in this performance. Even the bits with the VCS3 were tolerable! They were obviously having a good time. Like the other reviewers have said, I probably won't listen to this recording more than a few times. There are better sounding recordings of this band available from DGM, in fact all of them are better sounding than this recording. This one is for all of you "completists" out there; you now have another bean for your collection!
Not so bad...
From Arturs Kalnins of Ithaca, New York on .
It's bootleggy alright, but not a bad bootleg. Islands-era newbies should definitely not start here, but I'm glad I have it. Sailor's Tale rocks like no other, and Cirkus is uniquely dark and mean. And having Islands is cool, too. Probably the best-sounding track on the disc.
Sonically the worst KCCC
From Thomas Johnson of Glendale, Arizona on .
Yes, it's "rare," yes, it has "Islands," but other than that, there is no discernable reason to listen to this over the many other QUALITY KCCC releases of the Islands-era band. The sound quality on this is ATROCIOUS, and had I known it was an audience-sourced recording, I would have passed on this one - but DGM "forgot" to include the source information on this one. I ordered it early to get the $14.99 deal on it, and I'm glad I didn't spend the extra few dollars on it. I'll be lucky if I get more than this one listen out of it. Horrible.
CC-Live in Brighton?

Makes Earthbound sound like SCAD! If ya know where I'm comming from. I pre ordered and anxiously waited...boy was I let down... :(
shame on you mr. fripp
From chuck shibley of roseville, Minnesota on .
I was really looking forward to this cd until I opened it only to find a its a bootleg, and a really poor one at that. Granted the performanaces are really good, that this has the only live version of "Islands" availible, but if one can't listen to it because the audio SUCKS so bad, who cares. I've been a fan of King Crimson since day one, but for Mr. Fripp to allow this to be released without informing the public that the cd is a bootleg is really poor on his part. Shame on you Robert Fripp.
