review part 2
From Guy of Canberra, Australia on .
I wrote some comments on this a while back and here are some more I should have made: I commented that I felt this was a better album by Proj 3 than the more official release 'Masque', which was a development by Crimson's latest drummer Pat Masoletto. Well, don't despair Pat, I listened to the Austin concert again, and, worthy of comment by a long shot was Pat Masoletto's fascinating and original flow of drums and percussion for the show. It really is creative and seemless performance indeed and addresses the issue 'what does the next drummer for crimson do' (after the likes of Bruford, Wallace etc). I think Masque (deleted now?) - as I think I remarked - has great potential as a more popular and rich listen - but needs and deserves reworking again and again etc ........
I've liked it

This is one of the concerts used to assemble the album Masque from the ProjKects boxed set. Projekcts was the experimental series whereby Crimson used the idea of fractals as a concept and device to randomize and thus generate new music (I think). Projekcts was an interesting listen for Crimson fans that on boxed set delivered some very nice and exciting new things. My favourite was Projekct 4 West Coast Live because of the way the first say 3/4 of the album evolved (with some complexity and beauty)into an integrated 'suite'. Masque was very nice as well, but I felt that it needed to be developed further. Thus, I was pleasantly surprised when I got Live in Austin as it is a nicely organized and evolving 2 sets with a lot of the music from Masque. Projekct three was bass guitarless and the musical flow achieved a nice intimate ambience.
One of the guitarists did take on a bass role for P3 and the fast lightish jazz style was similarly nice. You can enjoy this one quite often.
Just gets better with every listen

It's releases like this that get me buying more. I mean, Masque was good but this convinced me P3 could dance with the big boys [Tony who?]. So good I didn't hesitate to buy the 2003 show.
The best of The ProjeKcts ever. 10 stars, please !!!

Fantastic show, great sound and feeling. Well known compositions sounds quite different !!!
I have probably heard all of the ProjeKcts' releases, either official (DGM & Collectors' Club) or unofficial ones (available to download from DGMLIVE) and for me this album is the best, ever. I'd like to give 10 stars, but I've opportunity to give only 5...

Genius! Not for the faint of heart, this rocks!
Of all the ProjeKcts, by far the best
From Michael Millington of Dallas, Pennsylvania on .
This performace of the ProjeKct Three stands alone at the top of all ProjeKct performances. While all the ProjeKcts are of course, not for the faint of heart, this one is the most enjoyable. It surpasses the releases on the ProjeKcts Bos set, which was while a good introduction, too processed. This gig is tighter than any other Club releases or any other downloads. The next best one is ProjeKct Four, Live in Boulder available as a download from dgmlive. Highly reccommended.
Actually, I Love This
From Joseph McFarland of Manassas, Virginia on .
My "first impression" review is above. After considered listening and much enjoyment, I see this more as an absolute treasure, of rare distinction and quality.
My favorite music (Miles Davis and Can being two touchstones) is of the moment, containing improvisation and choices on-the-fly, with enough space in that when a player does something worth hearing, it can be heard clearly with minimal din underneath save for sounds which provide counterpoint. Music with enough space in it that a brilliant drummer's inflections to the left and to the right can be heard and appreciated. Music made by masterful musicians working as an ego-less collective. This is such music.
I love ProjeKct One and ProjeKct Two's music also, truth be told I love these ProjeKcts more than I love King Crimson. This recording is my favorite of all though, and I hope there's additional ProjeKct Three recordings like this that might see the light of day, this is really great stuff.

A breathtaking rollercoaster ride in sound
Good If Not Great
From Joseph McFarland of Manassas, Virginia on .
The closest point of comparison is probably not ProjeKct 3's "Masque" CD, which is heavily processed and edited towards an etherial ambiance ("music for serious tokers" Fripp called it?). It sounds more like ProjeKct 4, as it is in fact 3 of those 4 guys and they were playing much of the same material at about the same time frame. Sounds like "West Coast Live" and "Roar of P4" with a bit more open space in it.
There are moments that this coalesces and moments when it creates interest, and moments when it drifts. Exactly what one would expect given the improvised nature. Moments of great playing is balanced out with moments of meandering. This stuff is not unlike a more metallic-sheened version of the Grateful Dead. I don't mean that as an insult, I mean it as a point of comparison.
Raging Beast

This is a powerful document of P3, better than what was on the ProjeKct box, similar to how the P4 Club release was better than what was in the box. Great, heavy lead-off track too
Fortunate Austin
From Ulli Spiegel of Overath, Germany on .
Blessed is austin to have had the chance to a trio of heavenly creatures producing the most exciting music. Fripp Gunn and especially Mastelotto show such a grat variety of rhythmic and melodic experiments. Fripp's guitar sometimes sounding as on Starless and Bibleblack. The communication between the musicians seems to have been perfect, one musician playing guitar- touch guitar and all the traps & buttons. Unfortunately the Texas people might have missed it as Pat writes in an diary entry.
Free drinks would have drawn more Texas folks to the concert. One house production manager said "ya all was pretty good but I like my music to have rhythm and melody ." Well, texas guy - you missed it, there's so much going on in the melodies and the rhythm - it takes a million years to find out.
So Austin, Texas, wherever you are, this ProjeKct IS the music for the next millenium.
The Best Thing in keep on Doing Things
From Michael Koch of Worms, Germany on .
I love all these Projekct CD´s very much. But the most I like Projekct 3 since I have heard them on their first release "Masque" (part of the 4-CD-Box). To me Projekct 3 is the more ambient part of all that stuff and in fact of an ongoing process in the history of King Crimson, the best way to do a kind of modern or so called contemporary music. If you like great drum and bass loops, a more spacier sound and more melancholic melodies than with the other Projekcts it will be also your favourite kind of things. In cause of that all things must pass, very highly recommended Pat on his crazy drum kit. A very good look into the future of Crimsonizing.
