So when you get Bjork talking about spirituality, Bill Laswell on the impact of something like 9/11, David Sylvian describing the slender toehold on his own creativity, David Torn’s sense of urgency regarding his mortality, or why for Tangerine Dream’s Edgar Froese, forgetting about who he is is also critical to success, Prasad’s interviews moves beyond the anodyne and take us on an absorbing journey into the artistic interior.
Whilst describing this as a book of transcripts of interviews might be accurate, it would seriously sell it short. Robert Fripp’s injunction that ‘the quality of question determines the quality of the answer’ seems especially applicable to Prasad’s undertaking. If you want to know what some of the key musicians of the 20th and 21st Century are thinking then this is a good a place as any to start. (Sid Smith)
... you might like to check out a book that's causing something of a buzz in musicians' circles. 'Innerviews: Music Without Borders' from Anil Prasad (Abstract Logix Books) features 'extraordinary conversations with extraordinary musicians', it says here. The author presents some two dozen interviews with great and interesting players, including Bill, and several of the people Bill knows well and has also played with - Ralph Towner, Jon Anderson, David Torn. Lots of interesting stuff about the art and psychology of music-making, perfect for those dark and wintry northern-hemisphere nights.(Bill Bruford, www.billbruford.com)
