The 18th Collectors' Club release (October, 2001). King Crimson, Live in Detroit, MI, Dec. 13, 1971.
"Our first two shows in the United States were in Detroit at the East Town Theater. This recording is the second of those shows. Of all the live concert performances of this band that I've heard so far,I think this has by far the best sound. Also, it's a sonic representation of the band at the peak of its powers, before the rot set in and the music changed." - Ian Wallace

Hot Stuff
From Mark van Kempen of Amsterdam, Netherlands on .
A great concert, very much in the spirit of the 1972 Earthbound tour recordings, but in a much, much better sound quality. Somewhat messy here and there, perhaps not the very best performances that are availabe, but getting close. A large part of this has been released on the Ladies of the Road compilation, but I prefer the complete set.
A reel to reel soundboad recording
From Jerry Smith of Tacoma, Washington on .
This show is one of the better recordings from the era due to the fact that it sounds like it was recorded on reel to reel and not an early cassette recording like a lot of the shows from the early '70's sometimes do. Good for us is the fact that the performance is also very good. This line up had been playing together for about 8 months and it really shows. The interplay between members here is very good.
This is no ISLAND
From Joe Prisco of Snohomish, Washington on .
While I might not be quite as generous with the stars as the two previous reviewers, I can't disagree with their enthusiasm. At first, Detroit '71 seems a touch down from the May Guildhall show (Club 14), but 'Groon' puts this idea to rest. Plus the 'Cirkus' here doesn't suffer Club 14's mix problems. I bought both simultaneously and I'm glad I did; strong sound quality, great performance, and Ian Wallace's spot-on liner notes complete the deal. These two releases have elevated the ISLANDS band from the so-so-ness that the studio album suggested, proving them to be the first-class Crimson that Fripp always insisted they were. Give a spin and you'll see why.
Choice Performance
From Craig Fazekas of West Berlin, New Jersey on .
I'm really impressed with this concert.
The sound is generally very good, given the age of the concert.
The song selection covers just about what I'd like to hear from these guys.
This version of 'Formentera Lady' is very tasty. Versus RF's review of the Islands version of the song; I quote "it sucks".
This does NOT suck!
A concert that all in all, has both the jamming and the menace that you'd expect from this quartet.
If you're asking me, I'm saying: Get it! Buy with confidence!
Best Live Release from This Crimso
From David Adair of Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota on .
Good fidelity, for the most part. Very good performance. Not even Sinfield's occasional disgusting VC3 effects can ruin this great release. This is a great concert from a less-than-great Crimso.
